@ryangrim It's inarguably an incentive! People don't have a problem with the concept of advances, they have a problem with *who* Substack is incentivizing to join, a problem that you'll note email providers don't have because Gmail doesn't go out and try to pay Jesse Singal to make an acct

the problem with #Substack and emailed content, at least for me, is the psychological response involved in checking email.
i see emails from writers and hustlers mixed in with those related to work and personal stuff and whatnot, and i just want to bail from all of it.

I really enjoy some of the Substack newsletters. They remind me of the fun, voice-y writing of the earlier internet, and I like the anti-top-down-authority idea of the platform.
But at the end of the day, what I'm really willing to pay for? Hard news in a newspaper, no question.

@inthefade I enjoy it, but I support the efforts of anyone getting the **** off Substack. From there, it comes down to whether you can find a platform that's comfortable for you. (I made my website private and kitted it out to be a functional newsletter, but that won't work for everyone.)

@nytimes @benyt As a writer in the 1970s-80s I had a number of bylines to my credit, but we never had to contend with people outside of the journalism infrastructure who were spreading bad ideas and contrary opinions. Writers should know that isn’t tolerated. Shut down #substack now! Cheers.

Maybe if they have writers who are advocating for the use of violence.

If they drive their employer into the ground, it's not really their problem - like locusts, they just move on. It's a small price to pay for forcing their social/religious views on others.
