@JustinBellamy I 100% agree with this... I think it's a great resource (Stack overflow on steroids), but if the person using it doesn't have a solid foundation in programming, it could lead to a lot of mishaps down the road.

@jashjain98 @StackOverflow ChatGPT's training data is older than 2021, so new novel bugs still need humans to fix.

A lot of programming is thinking iteratively about how to solve a problem and having A+ web search skills. Stack Overflow is your best friend. LOL

@xsgames_ I read the do***entation then come up with a solution. 80% of the time the do***entation has all I need to solve a problem. The other 20% is stack overflow.

@dannypostmaa problem i see with this increasing popularity is that knowledge sharing becomes more centralised than before with platforms like Stack overflow.

@KJ_Crypt0 @WhaleChart ChatGPT is my new stack overflow. Never had a coding problem it can't answer, and I don't have to browse through all similar topics to find the real answer.

@WatcherGuru If you’ve built software with chatGPT you know as well as I do that you still need to stackoverflow in Google things and do***entation read. it is however tastic it writing code that you need to fix up just a little bit 😅

@karlsutt What I have used Stack Overflow for my entire life.
I have never actually posted any question there, but started writing many a questions.
Every time I need to explain my problem for someone else, I accidentally solve it for myself.

At best it will only save time, but it implies the physician already knows what to look for. The main reason why Stack Overflow is useful to me as a developer is because I have learnt to identify & articulate the problem and weed through the solutions quickly to find an answer.

This is more like AI stack overflow for doctors than a self diagnostic tool and hope it stays that way for now.
I would really love a self diagnostic tool too but given current status of LLMs i don't trust it enough

But Stack Overflow has a problem. ChatGPT doesn't care if your question is dumb, obvious, or if you're a noob. It'll answer it and give you code. So will YouChat.
I know coders who hate SO and it's culture, but where else are you going to go?

This is already starting to happen with Stack Overflow. Traffic is down 12% since ChatGPT came out. We can declare "so what if GPT is good at learning, so be it", but... it's not good at learning. It's good at learning from what others learned & wrote online. So we have a problem

@StackOverflow I can tell you for free:
- low code/no code stacks bloated for no reason
- languages designed to suit laziness (python) rather than efficiency (cpp)
- tech guy/girl culture when 99% have ZERO compsci/problem solving background
- overly complex OS layers (android)

I worry though that I asked ChatGPT a bunch of questions today and it gave me useful answers. But other devs can’t benefit from that like if I’d asked publicly on Stack Overflow. I guess ChatGPT v2 will miss out on training data too if problem solving moves to private channels.

@bardelotnzl @PR0GRAMMERHUM0R If your recursive algorithm hits stack overflow, you don't have a valid termination condition; a problem that can happen just as easily with an iterative implementation. A lot of times, the best choice is the most readable one.

@biserdimitrov It is a tool, so everything depends on how you use it. My problem with such tools is the verification of the solution - you need to be able to understand and ***ess it. Otherwise, it is not much different than copy-paste from StackOverflow
