Rather than just shutting restaurants/bars down…
Requiring reservations/tickets only – with contact tracing built in to OpenTable/Tock/Eventbrite etc. – could possibly keep them open safely this winter.
Pre-purchase a ticket, and if you no-show, the business keeps the cash.

@calculatedrisk So I have a problem with using Open Table data here. The places that are most likely to be returning to normal are the places least likely to be on open table. I have never even heard of someone using OpenTable outside of Major cities, and even there it’s thin.

@drsxr @OpenTable Was the comparison 2019 vs. 2020? If so, I wonder if reservations at restaurants were down in early Sept 2019 due to hurricane Dorian, making it such that there was not a big difference in 2020 (relative to 2019)?

@CDHoweInstitute I find it very hard to believe that some provinces had restos with more customers in early Sep compared to last year. That makes no sense other than if there was an increased usage of the OpenTable app so that actual diners were down but diners using the app was up.

@patkiernan @NY1 I don't dine out expecting privacy (and I give up this exact data readily to OpenTable and Resy). Ideally, the data would be stored somewhere protected and only accessed in the event of reported infection or exposure. I think the harder problem is enforcement and 100% coverage.
