I remember that time when I was at MapQuest and I deployed a Java web archive straight to a production load balancer with Maven Cargo and forgot my web app was running on 3 hosts. Only 1 was updated and it caused a major outage on our Blackberry mobile app.

@awwwnchal No offence. This is a cultural issue. In US, no one usually asks a random stranger for directions like in India. So someone may genuinely try to help. Happened with me several years back and was told how to use MapQuest.

@ItsSealyyall I have maps in both of my vehicles and when I take a road trip, I take an atlas. Not saying I never use MapQuest but I love to look down and actually see the roads, towns, mountains, lakes, etc.

@nipcage Omg. When I got my license that was just around when it was ok to borrow your parents’ giant cellphone. I’ve gone to AAA to have them print TripTiks for long road trips (like when I drove from LA to Boston)... directions by landmark over the phone written down, Mapquest.

@AlecStapp It’s definitely become very user friendly to travel nowadays. Having to deal with paper maps (or mapquest printouts) and guidebooks and still getting totally lost. Haggling the price of taxi rides in broken English (no meters). Less stress and effort today with the mobile phones

@vivaaji @flutter_don @nradhakn @skpkaruna @rajbhagatt I drove mostly in Mapquest era, and some short duration in early 2010 with GPS. With advent of GPS based systems, map knowledge and direction sense would come down. There is no such possibility here in India as zero cannot go any further down. 😜

@kimlypso @PGHCityPaper I moved here 10ish years ago before I had a smart phone and would copy down mapquest directions into a black and yellow composition book that I’d keep in my car. I also went on a lot of okcupid dates and got to know neighborhoods by being like “oh, that’s where this dude lives”

MapQuest is how I found my way to my first furcon. I didn't own a smartphone or a navigation device at the time. I didn't always have a printer either so I would copy these down by hand when I first moved to Madison. I did learn how to plan routes on paper maps as a kid too.

The revolution that was MapQuest. Before MapQuest if you were going somewhere new you had to either speak to someone who had been there or on the phone & write down instructions, and/or use a PHYSICAL MAP.

@MaierRussell @themonicakay @BigJacks There was also the fact that directions could be SO WRONG, if you lived in a rural area! One time I was trying to Mapquest a "back road" from Duluth to my hometown, rather than driving the 5 hours it originally tried to send me (down to MSP, THEN up to home)...
